A Guided Wild Horse Experience

Since 2004 Kimerlee has been wrapped in the healing and transfomative power that the horse has on our souls.

This unique experience aims at assisting with personal transformations, through the language of the rescued wild residents at the sanctuary and the medium of photography. Photography is another form of viewing the world with a different persepctive, hopefully, a lens on life you may not have considered before.

ABOUT THIS EXPERIENCE

Over the two and half days, we step into their world, allowing presence to shape our photography. In the quiet power of rescued, once-wild mustangs at the sanctuary and the untamed beauty of the Sand Wash Basin, we don’t just capture images—we bear witness to their authentic lives.

This is an invitation to slow down, to see with your heart, and to embrace the stories unfolding before you. The wild is not something to be taught; it is something to be experienced, letting the horses show you the way while capturing beautiful images.

Let us bring you on a journey, not only through the spectacular beauty of the sanctuary's lanscape filled with wild horses but a journey of self-discovery through your photography. From the moment you arrive, we will guide you through the process of slowing down, leaving your troubles behind, and staying present in the moment amongst these majestic creatures.

Why Rescue?

In 2022 The Bureau of Land Management began rounding up hundreds of mustangs from two of Colorado's most iconic wild horse herds.  Initially, they took hundreds of wild horses from the Sand Wash Basin Herd Management Area (HMA) and then moved south to repeat similar round up operations within the Piceance-East Douglas HMA.

A Photographic Experience that Gives Back

Half of the costs for this unique experience will go to The Wild Horse Refuge in order to support their efforts of caring for these once iconic wild and freeroaming horses in sanctuary forever. Here is where their hooves will race across the high desert floor, with their manes and tails free flowing in the wind, forever.

Connect with Wildness

You will leave with so much more than just images but with a deeper connection—to the land, to the mustangs, and to the untamed spirit within yourself. More than photographers, we are storytellers, witnesses, and voices for those who cannot speak. As you return home, may you carry with you the stories of the wild, sharing them with loved ones, igniting conversations, and expanding the growing circle of advocacy.

About the Sanctuary

The Wild Horse Refuge is a private non-profit sanctuary that was created entirely for rescued Mustangs that were removed from Colorado Herd Management Areas (HMA).  Sand Wash Basin favorites such as Michalangelo, Pinyon and others who were tragically rounded up, were fortunate to find sanctuary on these expansive grounds. All the Wild Horses living on this special property are now protected and have regained the freedom they had prior to government interference.

As wild horse populations experience increasing Bureau of Land Management (BLM) roundup situations, our goal is to provide rescued wild horses with a home that closely resembles their original life in the wild.

The Wild Horse Refuge is dedicated to preserving the freedom of Colorado's wild mustangs by providing them with free-range access to over 30,000 acres of natural space. This safe haven for wild horses provides a unique opportunity for them to return to rangeland that is filled with amazing natural landscapes, including rocks, trees, hills, buttes, bluffs, and lots of water.

The rescued mustands here also recieve exceptional care - which includes access to world class veterinary services through the Wild Animal Sanctuary's full-time medical staff.
