The Water Horse

Outer Banks, North Carolina, 2014

Having traveled into numerous western HMAs I was finally able to visit the wild horses that inhabit the eastern shores. A very unique experience with unique horses. This is the only time I have left one of my journeys without any element of sadness. Unlike our wild horses to the west, these horses are completely protected from removal. Their population growth is carefully watched and modified. They are gentle, calm and have an essence all their own. Brought by the early European explorers, these horses are descended of Spanish Mustangs. The once roamed freely along the length of these coastal barrier islands for hundreds of years. Like all wild horses - they are warriors. The area can be an unforgiving environment and these magnificent creatures have earned their rightful place by the elements they have endured and survived.
